Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis has taken part in the opening of GLASS LT factory in Alytus. This is one of the biggest recent investments in the region testifying its attractiveness and potential.

‘I am happy to be part of the celebration as we open today the GLASS LT factory. The development of your company demonstrates the vigour of the business in the region heading towards leading positions in relevant industry through continuous investment in key equipment and software’, said the Prime Minister.

The construction of the plant cost 4 million, and another 5 million will follow subsequently as part of investments in the next generation equipment, information and management systems.

The Prime Minister pointed out the need for the establishment of the Alytus Free Economic Zone (FEZ), which would lead to a more effective use of the economic potential of Alytus region and greater investments. Currently, The Alytus Industrial Park has nowhere to expand, besides, there is none of special economic zones in the southern part of Lithuania for attracting large investments, irrespective of its logistic appeal to investors as cross-border area with Poland.  Alytus enjoys the high level of excellence in the field of processing industry. Not only is the planned new FEZ expected to bring in new investments but also to invigorate the local supply chains as well as reduce emigration.

The Ministry of Economy sees it important for Alytus to designate an area of 100 hectares for the establishment of FEZ. A more precise location will be chosen by the municipality in consultation with public enterprise Invest Lithuania. FEZ is projected to attract about 600 million euros in investments, generate 2500 jobs. The indicative need for investment in infrastructure is 10 million euros.
