Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis congratulated the participants of the 16th Seimas of the World Lithuanian Community and expressed his appreciation for their contribution to the success of the state.

According to the Prime Minister, it is particularly pleasant that the celebration of the centennial of the restoration of the state has brought together the entire Lithuanian family from all over the world.

“Sunday is a historic date for the World Lithuanian Community, celebrating its 60th anniversary of the Seimas of the World Lithuanian Community. It was on that day that the idea of uniting the Lithuanians scattered across the world was laid down in the Constitution of the World Lithuanian Community, and the first board of the World Lithuanian Community was elected’.

On behalf of the Government, the Prime Minister thanked the World Lithuanian Community and all the Lithuanians in the world for their efforts to fight for Lithuania’s independence, and subsequently, after its restoration, for the success of the state.

‘None of your efforts or advice have gone wasted, and the results are obvious. Today, Lithuania is a prosperous democratic state, an active and full member of all major international organisations - the European Union, NATO, and of the OECD, as of recently’, said Saulius Skvernelis.

The next year we will be celebrating the 70th anniversary of the publication of the Charta of Lithuania in Augsburg, which was another important step in strengthening the Lithuanian community and unity in the world at that time. To mark this occasion, the Seimas has dedicated the year 2019 for the World Lithuanians.

Wishing a successful and productive work for this Seimas of the Lithuanian Community, the Head of Government invited the participants to maintain the spirit of togetherness and also focus on the next year with a view to celebrating it in a meaningful way and also, to holding a citizenship referendum, if the decision is taken in this regard, and doing our best for its success.

The Prime Minister thanked everyone for the contribution to the development and implementation of the programme Global Lithuania.

‘We have gone a long way, so I invite you to think and share your ideas as to how you see this country post-2020, and how we can strengthen it and to encourage the Lithuanians to return. I hope you have a productive work and I wish happy centennial celebrations. Nothing will set us apart, and our togetherness will become ever tighter in the future’, said Saulius Skvernelis.
