Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis has met with Dutch Politician, Member of the European Parliament and Spitzenkandidat for European Commission President Bas Eickhout.

The Prime Minister has stressed that Lithuania maintains good bilateral relations and active dialogue with the Netherlands, while cooperation within the framework of the EU and NATO structures is particularly significant.

‘We are glad that Lithuania highly supports the European Union; however, additional efforts of all member states of the Union are needed to sustain this support in the future. Financing from the next EU’s Multiannual Financial Framework is highly important to us; we seek a balanced budget of the EU’, said the Head of Government.

According to Skvernelis, financing for the Cohesion Policy has to be reduced gradually. On CAP, it has been noted that Lithuania will approve of only full completion of external convergence of direct payments.

It is also important to ensure financing for infrastructure projects (Rail Baltica, synchronisation) and decommissioning of Ignalina NPP.

The Prime Minister has thanked the EP Group of the Greens for its support for Lithuania while seeking to secure the required financing for decommissioning of the Ignalina NPP and shaping the position on the threat posed by the Astravyets NPP.

It has been underlined during the meeting that Brexit is a serious challenge to Europe and that there will be no winners in the process. Lithuania’s priorities: to ensure non-discrimination and the rights of the Lithuanian citizens living in the UK. Following Brexit, Lithuania is interested in maintaining as close relations as possible, especially in security and defence policy.
