Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis has met with Apostolic Nuncio to Lithuania, Archbishop Petar Rajič, to discuss the bilateral relations.

The Prime Minister has congratulated Petar Rajič on his appointment and thanked the Holy See for the special attention shown to Lithuania, while expressing his hope about the future positive trend in the bilateral relations.

‘Lithuania has always regarded the relations with the Holy See as special. We must work together to keep them up and foster them in the future. I know that we have a strong and reliable ally in the Holy See on many issues that are important to us’, said Saulius Skvernelis.

The Church’s role has been noted in daily life - spiritual, cultural, social, particularly attending to the most vulnerable and socially excluded groups in the community. One of the most important events in Lithuania last year was Pope Francis’s visit to Lithuania. It has been noted that Pope’s attention to Lithuania’s tragic history in the twentieth century and the appointment of Archbishop Emeritus of Kaunas Sigitas Tamkevičius as Cardinal are seen as an appreciation of the people of Lithuania who suffered from Soviet repression.

Saulius Skvernelis thanked Archbishop Rajič for Holy See’s involvement in international issues such as peacekeeping, migration policy, reducing social exclusion, climate change and others.

The Holy See did not recognise Lithuania’s occupation and maintained diplomatic relations with Lithuania during the most difficult periods in history. The Lithuanian word on Vatican Radio was the voice of a subjugated nation to the world.
