Bilateral relations and human rights issues in Cuba discussed at the meeting with Carrie Filipetti, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Cuba and Venezuela

First Deputy Chancellor of the Government Deividas Matulionis has met with Carrie Filipetti, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Cuba and Venezuela.

Ms Filipetti has brought a letter from US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis. The letter outlines the US position on the deteriorating human rights situation in Cuba and asks, on behalf of the US administration, to refrain from ratifying the EU-Cuba Agreement on Political Dialogue and Cooperation.

The bilateral co-operation between Lithuania and the United States has also been discussed at the meeting. First Deputy Chancellor Matulionis has emphasized the importance of the relations with the United States. Regarding political cooperation with Cuba, Mr Matulionis has thanked the US Secretary of State for his letter pointing out that Lithuania has been the last EU Member State that has not yet ratified this document signed back in 2016.
