In response to the request from the Italian Government received through diplomatic channels on May 31st regarding the assistance to migrants rescued at sea, Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis instructed today the Ministry of the Interior to start asylum procedures for 2-3 asylum-seekers rescued in the Mediterranean. 100 people - 60 men, 23 women and 17 children - were rescued on May 30th by Italian Cigala Fulgosi. Lithuania will relocate only those persons who are eligible for asylum.

‘Italy is our important partner in the European Union and NATO, and we share common security challenges. Lithuania supports the principle of solidarity not only in words but also in deeds’, says the Prime Minister.
