Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis visited Suwalki, where he met with President of the town Czesław Renkiewicz and the local Lithuanian community to discuss relevant issues.

The interlocutors noted the good relations between the Lithuanian and Polish Governments. The Prime Minister pointed out the importance of Suwalki as a gate to European countries not only for Lithuanians but for other countries too. The Prime Minister said he would always support the partnership between the cities of Lithuania and Poland and was particularly pleased that Suwalki was the most active partner in Poland. Efforts must be continued to promote this regional cooperation.

During the bilateral meeting with Renkiewicz, Skvernelis once again expressed a request and support for the local initiative to set up a Lithuanian Education and Culture Centre in Suwalki and the need to have a pre-school education group in Suwałki. It was noted that that it was very important that the project would start on 1 September.

‘We look forward to and expect quick solutions to bring this centre up as soon as possible. If necessary, the Government of the Republic of Lithuania will contribute fully to the establishment of the Lithuanian Education and Culture Centre.

At the beginning of last year, the President of Suwalki received a request from Lithuanian families living in Suwalki regarding the establishment of a Lithuanian pre-school (kindergarten) group. The possibility of opening this group on the premises of the above mentioned cultural centre will be considered when the centre is put into operation. A temporary solution could be the establishment of the Lithuanian group in one of the Polish kindergartens in Suwalki.

To mark the restoration of Lithuania’s independence, the Prime Minister took part in the Holy Mass at the Sacred Hear of Jesus Church in Suwalki.

The Prime Minister completed his visit to Suwalki in a solemn event to celebrate the restoration of Lithuania’s independence. The Prime Minister informed the audience about the completing negotiations on strengthening the signal of the Lithuanian national broadcaster - LRT - in the region. The Lithuanians living in Suwalki will be able to watch high quality LRT transmissions as of 31 March. It should be noted that it was the first time for the Holy Mass and the reception to be held on the occasion of the restoration of Lithuania’s independence in Suwalki.
