Prime Minister: Independence has always been about our security and freedom

Docked in Klaipėda a decade ago, the liquefied natural gas storage vessel Independence has witnessed a historic moment today as the Lithuanian flag has been ceremonially raised, marking its official transfer to Lithuania’s ownership. This vital asset has played a key role in the country’s journey toward energy independence. Speaking at the handover ceremony, Acting Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė has highlighted the strategic importance of the Independence project in safeguarding Lithuania’s energy security and independence.

‘The success of this project cannot be measured solely in the millions of euros saved annually by allowing us to competitively select gas suppliers. It has always been about our security, our independence, and our freedom from external interference by regimes that have persistently sought to exert their influence wherever possible’, said Prime Minister Šimonytė.

The LNG terminal and its infrastructure, including the Independence vessel, not only address Lithuania’s energy needs but also support neighbouring countries in the region. The terminal’s significance has become even more evident since February 2022, when Russia launched its large-scale war against Ukraine.

Ingrida Šimonytė has recalled the scepticism surrounding the project more than a decade ago, when it was seen as overly ambitious and costly amidst the global economic crisis.

‘There were voices suggesting a regional project instead, one that might take longer but cost less. However, time has vindicated this bold decision. Today, the LNG terminal, along with the infrastructure in the neighbouring countries, has become a cornerstone of regional energy security,’ said the Prime Minister.

Prime Minister Šimonytė has also reflected on Lithuania’s leadership during energy crises, particularly in 2022, when Russia disrupted gas supplies. “I am proud that we could step up and offer a safe alternative to our neighbours when they turned to us for help. This is what true friends, partners, and allies do,” she said. Looking back at her involvement in the project’s early stages as Finance Minister, Ingrida Šimonytė has said: ‘It is an honour to have been part of the inception of this project years ago and to stand here today as the vessel officially becomes Lithuania’s property. I am confident the terminal is in capable hands, and I extend my heartfelt congratulations and thanks to everyone who contributed to this success,’
