Prime Minister meets the Marshal of the Polish Sejm in Lithuania
On Monday, Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas has met Szymon Hołownia, Marshal of the Polish Sejm, visiting Vilnius on the eve of the 35th anniversary of the restoration of independence of Lithuania. Mr Paluckas and the Speaker of the Polish Parliament held talks on bilateral relations between Lithuania and Poland, security, regional energy projects and support for Ukraine.
“It is gratifying that Lithuania and Poland nurture close ties not because geographical proximity obliges us to do so, but because we are like-minded countries whose interests, values, and perspectives align on fundamental issues. Sharing the same view on the challenges to our security, we devote special attention to this—both through investments in defence and by strengthening our cooperation in various fields. We are in the same boat, so we must row in the same direction, as we are doing today. I have no doubt that this will continue in the future,” said Prime Minister G. Paluckas.
Both Lithuania and Poland are increasing their defence funding, and it is important to encourage other NATO allies to do the same, the meeting noted.
Among today's security priorities are the development of the defence industry in Europe and the region, the protection of critical infrastructure, and support for Ukraine in pursuit of sustainable peace in Europe and the containment of Russian aggression. It is also important to maintain a close and constructive transatlantic relationship, said Prime Minister.
The meeting also covered strategic regional projects, including the Harmony Link electricity project. As the Lithuanian Prime Minister noted, Poland's support was instrumental in the successful implementation of the Baltic States' synchronisation, serving as the best and most exemplary case of a partnership that strengthens the region.
The conversation highlighted the unprecedented importance of cooperation between the countries of the Baltic sea and Poland in enhancing regional cohesion, security, resilience, and economic potential.
The meeting also underlined the need to continue and increase pressure through sanctions on Russia and Belarus.
