Prime Minister: no alternatives to the close ties between Lithuania and Poland

Acting Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis met with Poland’s President Andrzej Duda to discuss recent developments in the bilateral co-operation in the fields of economy, culture and foreign and security policy.

According to Saulius Skvernelis, the bilateral cooperation happened to be the best in several decades. It is the result of the mutual efforts on the part of the Presidents and Governments of both countries.

‘Lithuania and Poland are stronger together, so we cannot afford any divisions in our unity.’ We must continue our strategic infrastructure projects and strengthen common security in the region rooted on the transatlantic values’, said Saulius Skvernelis.

The interlocutors recalled the anniversary of the Constitution of 3 May 1791 and Mutual Pledge of the Commonwealth of the Two Nations noting their importance for the development of the historical memory of the two nations and of the whole of Europe to that matter.

It was agreed that the principles of mutual respect and trust had to continue to be key in addressing issues of concern to ethnic communities. It was noted that, under the leadership of Saulius Skvernelis, Lithuania improved education conditions and ensured television broadcasts in the mother tongue, also a Lithuanian Education and Culture Centre in Suwalki opened up.
