On the morning of 2 December, Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius met with the new Ambassador of the Kingdom of Denmark, Dan E. Frederiksen. During the meeting bilateral relations were discussed, and the focus was given to the close cooperation between the countries in the context of the Nordic Baltic Eight (NB8), the EU and NATO.

“I am delighted that our countries share good and close relations, and I hope that during Your term in Lithuania we will continue our successful cooperation by pursuing common goals, such as economically sustainable and secure neighbourhood in Europe”, said Prime Minister Butkevičius.

The Head of Government thanked the Ambassador for the Denmark’s active involvement in the NATO’s air policing mission in Lithuania, its continuous cooperation with the Lithuanian military officers, and partnership in military exercises.

In the meeting it was emphasised that both countries support the projects of the common EU energy market; this year Denmark is holding the presidency of the Nordic Baltic Eight (NB8) which focuses on this matter. The Prime Minister noted that the power projects NordBalt and LitPol Link, scheduled for completion by the end of the year, would expand Lithuania’s electricity supply opportunities, thus also ensuring the national competitiveness.

On Russia’s initiative to build a gas line NordStream-2, the Prime Minister said that the project was in conflict with the EU's goals to reduce energy dependence on Russia and might fall subject to political manipulations.

The interlocutors welcomed the current close economic cooperation between the countries: Denmark has for a long time been among the top investors in Lithuania, and the bilateral trade turnover between Lithuania and Denmark last year accounted for nearly 1 billion euros.

The Ambassador said he appreciated the possibility of working in Lithuania at an important and exciting time, and the Prime Minister wished him success in strengthening the ties between Lithuania and Denmark.

D. E. Frederiksen has been the sixth Denmark’s Ambassador in Lithuania.
