Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis: I am happy that Estonia has remained our reliable partner in the region

On his visit to Tallinn (Estonia), Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis met with his Estonian counterpart Jüri Ratas. They talked about issues of both bilateral as well as regional relevance, including the regional security, the energy development opportunities, the Rail Baltica, etc.

“I am very pleased to be in the country, with which we share close ties and good cooperation in regional and international formats. Estonia has remained our important and reliable partner”, said the Head of Government.

On regional security, the Prime Minister noted Lithuania’s firm commitment to further strengthen its defence. To this end, 2 per cent defence spending has been planned for 2018. The Prime Minister also pointed out the need for centralising military procurement with Estonia.

The Prime Minister assured his colleague of Lithuania’s dedication to working with the Estonian and Latvian partners to advance the Rail Baltica project. Last week, the government approved the intergovernmental agreement on the Rail Baltica development project, which will be signed by he Prime Ministers of the Baltic Council of Ministers tomorrow.

The Prime Ministers also discussed the implications of the Belarusian nuclear power plant for the region, and the Estonian Prime Minister expressed support for Lithuania’s position as regards the restriction of electricity imports from insecure third-party plants.
