Prime Minister: The Lithuania–Italy Partnership Holds Many Untapped Opportunities
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas met at the Office of the Government with Adolfo Urso, Italy’s Minister for Enterprises and Made in Italy, who is visiting Lithuania along with a delegation of Italian business representatives.
“Lithuania and Italy have untapped potential for cooperation in areas that both countries prioritise – namely defence and the space industry, energy, and the life sciences. Lithuania is flexible and open to various partnership formats in these strategically important fields. I am pleased that Lithuania and Italy share a common vision for our shared home, the European Union, and its competitiveness. We ourselves have submitted proposals and will support partner initiatives that would help the EU reduce regulatory and bureaucratic burdens, boost the development of innovation, and strengthen the defence industry – so vital for our collective security,” said Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the Lithuanian Government’s efforts to reduce bureaucratic obstacles for businesses and foreign investment – measures that will open up more opportunities for foreign partners, including Italian companies.
With Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine ongoing, and its commitment to long-term confrontation with the EU and NATO countries, the defence industry must receive special attention, the Prime Minister noted. Lithuania is addressing this by improving the legislative environment, inviting foreign defence companies to invest in the country, and focusing on innovation and shorter supply chains.
During the meeting – also attended by Edmondo Cirielli, Italy’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation – strong support was expressed for Ukraine, which is under attack by Russia, as well as for the European integration aspirations of Ukraine, Moldova, and the Western Balkan countries.
The discussion also emphasised the importance of strong transatlantic ties, Europe's energy security and resilience, and the progress made by Lithuania and Italy, as well as opportunities for closer cooperation in the field of renewable energy.
