Baltic Prime Ministers Join Forces: in Talks with European Commission on Rail Baltica Funding They Will Speak with One Voice
Prime Ministers of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia have approved a Joint Declaration on the strategic Rail Baltica project.
Today, in a telephone conversation, Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius, Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal and Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs have agreed to coordinate their positions in discussions with the European Commission on future EU funding for the Rail Baltica project. The three countries have committed to completing Rail Baltica within the next EU Multiannual Financial Framework period, while maintaining the objective of keeping the project on its current schedule.
“During my visits to Riga and Tallinn, we agreed that we need to speak with one voice with the European Commission– Rail Baltica is a joint Baltic and European project that is important for our security, military mobility, and economy. We have an agreement to work together to secure the requisite EU funding, coordinate the implementation of the project, and ensure clear responsibility for each country’s commitments,” said Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius.
The Prime Ministers have also discussed the need to secure increased and more predictable funding for Rail Baltica under the new EU Multiannual Financial Framework. The parties have committed to working together to reduce project costs, improve project management, and strengthen coordination of their efforts.
The Joint Declaration points out that successful implementation of Rail Baltica will require not only close regional cooperation but also clear national responsibility.
