On Tuesday, Chancellor of the Government, Giedrė Balčytytė, has attended the state funeral of Japan‘s former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, as part of her working visit to Japan.

‘Today, we bid farewell to a distinguished statesman and a devoted advocate for democracy, whose memory will be respected not only in Japan but also far beyond its borders. Shinzo Abe, who visited our country in 2018, was also a friend of Lithuania having greatly contributed to the strengthening of our bilateral relations’, said Chancellor of the Government Giedrė Balčytytė.

Shinzo Abe led the Government from 2006 to 2007 and from 2012 to 2020. He was the longest serving Prime Minister in Japan’s history.

The Prime Minister enjoyed a wide acclaim as a supporter of the principle of multilateralism in international relations and as a steadfast promoter of democratic values in the world.
