Chancellor meets South Korea’s Trade Minister

On Wednesday, Chancellor of the Government Giedrė Balčytytė has met with South Korea’s Minister for Trade, Ahn Dukgeun, who is visiting Lithuania to present the bid of the South Korean city of Busan to host the EXPO 2030 World Expo. The parties have also discussed the potential for cooperation particularly in the field of high technology, also support for Ukraine and the reconstruction process.

‘Lithuania sees South Korea as a like-minded country and an important partner in the Indo-Pacific region. In our effort to strategically diversify trade, we opened our embassy in Seoul last year, and we welcome the growing cooperation and opportunities like this to share our views and to contribute to fostering opportunities for new exchanges in trade, science, and culture,’ said Chancellor of the Government Balčytytė.

South Korea’s Minister for Trade Mr Dukgeun has outlined the vision of EXPO 2030, which focuses on collective solutions to global crises, clean technologies, and sustainable progress. A decision on the right to host EXPO 2030 will be taken in November next year.

The Chancellor and the Minister for Trade have also talked about the need for Ukraine’s reconstruction in the aftermath of Russia’s war. Lithuania has already been involved in the reconstruction effort, launching the first three projects for the reconstruction of key civilian infrastructure and the establishment of a mobile settlement in the town of Borodianka.

The Chancellor of the Government has noted that Lithuania would be happy to cooperate closely with South Korea should it decide to contribute to the reconstruction process, which is needed badly by the people of Ukraine, particularly now with the winter fast approaching.
