Items discussed: situation in Belarus and European Union economic recovery plan

In their telephone conversation, Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė and Leader of the European People's Party Manfred Weber discussed the situation in Belarus, the European Union budget and the economic recovery plan to mitigate the effects of the crisis.

The Prime Minister thanked the European People's Party for its support to the people of Belarus as well as to Lithuania as regards its efforts to prevent the unsafe import of electricity from Astravyets NPP into the European Union.

‘The Sakharov Prize presented to the Belarusian opposition by the European Parliament this Wednesday demonstrates the strong foundations of the values of the European Union. I have no doubt that the European Union will continue to strongly support the people of Belarus who are fighting for freedom, democracy and fair elections’, said the Prime Minister.

Manfred Weber informed the Prime Minister about the ongoing discussions in the European Parliament and invited her to present Lithuania’s European policy and proposals on Belarus at a meeting of the European People's Party group.

The fight against the Covid-19 pandemic and the readiness to vaccinate the population were also discussed.
