Prime Minister after meeting with Kaja Kallas: as hybrid attacks intensify, Europe must respond faster, with greater unity and resolve
As Russia continues to test the European Union’s unity through hybrid attacks, Europe must step up its preparedness, invest in security and maintain its support for Ukraine. Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius made these remarks during a meeting with Kaja Kallas, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission.
The parties focused on security, Lithuania’s upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union, support for Ukraine and transatlantic relations.
“Recent incidents across Europe have once again shown that hybrid threats from the east are not confined to the Baltic region - they are a challenge to the security of the entire Europe. Russia is testing our resolve and seeking to intimidate us into scaling back our support for Ukraine. The EU’s eastern flank is the first line of defence, but European security is indivisible. That is why our response must be collective and united,” Prime Minister Sinkevičius said.
The Prime Minister noted that Lithuania would remain among the countries committing at least 5% of GDP to defence. At the same time, national efforts alone are not enough. Europe needs joint investment in air and missile defence, the protection of critical infrastructure, cybersecurity, border surveillance and resilience to hybrid threats.
The security of the eastern flank must be treated as a priority across the EU. The Prime Minister said this priority should be clearly reflected in the EU’s new Multiannual Financial Framework.
The meeting also covered continued support for Ukraine, its place in Europe’s security architecture and the need to help Ukraine withstand renewed Russian pressure, particularly as the colder months approach.
“A strong Ukraine means a stronger and safer Europe,” Prime Minister Sinkevičius said.
Ukraine’s and Moldova’s EU membership aspirations must also remain high on the EU agenda. As the Prime Minister noted, EU enlargement, alongside efforts to strengthen security, resilience and competitiveness, will be among Lithuania’s priorities during its Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
The parties underlined that a strong transatlantic relationship and unity remain as the cornerstone of our common security, defence and deterrence.
