Prime Minister in Lutsk: Historic Ties Underpin Strong Support for Ukraine
Lutsk is one of the most important sites in the shared history of Lithuania and Ukraine. Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius began his working visit to Ukraine in this city on Sunday, highlighting the centuries-old ties between the two countries.
After paying tribute to the memory of fallen Ukrainian defenders, M. Sinkevičius met in Lutsk with Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi. On Sunday, the two prime ministers focused on bilateral cooperation, support for Ukraine as it defends itself against Russian aggression, and strengthening resilience.
“Relations between Lithuania and Ukraine go back centuries and are part of our shared European identity. Culture and history are the roots of a state’s identity, which Russia is attacking today with no less ferocity. Our support for Ukraine will remain steadfast, comprehensive and long-term, so that everything that has been created can have a future in a free and independent Ukraine,” Prime Minister M. Sinkevičius said.
On Sunday, the prime ministers of Lithuania and Ukraine met with the leaders of Volyn Oblast and the Lutsk City Council, as well as members of the Verkhovna Rada representing the region. The meetings focused on Ukraine’s needs, particularly with winter approaching, and on Lithuania’s support initiatives.
A significant part of this support is directed towards Ukraine’s reconstruction and recovery. Lithuania is contributing to the restoration of schools and kindergartens and the installation of shelters in them, strengthening energy resilience and renewing civilian infrastructure, demining, rehabilitation of service members, and other areas, providing practical assistance that is felt in the daily lives of the Ukrainian people.
The “Children First” initiative is aimed at supporting children affected by the war and their families, drawing on Lithuania’s experience in child protection, rehabilitation and systemic reforms. Another important initiative is the “Kurk Ukrainai” (“Create for Ukraine”) programme, which seeks to bring young Ukrainian professionals back to the country and integrate them into the public sector, contributing to Ukraine’s recovery and European integration.
Today, Prime Ministers M. Sinkevičius and S. Koretskyi also visited Lutsk Castle, which dates back to the period of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
In 1429, at the initiative of Vytautas the Great, Grand Duke of Lithuania, the Congress of Lutsk was held here. European rulers and their representatives gathered to discuss the most important issues concerning the future of the region and the continent, as well as Vytautas the Great’s coronation as King of Lithuania.
