Prime Minister Reaffirms Lithuania’s Unwavering Support for Ukraine
Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius spoke on Tuesday with his Ukrainian counterpart, Sergii Koretskyi, who took office as the country’s Prime Minister earlier this week.
During the conversation, M. Sinkevičius once again emphasised Lithuania’s unwavering solidarity with Ukraine, the commitment of the 21st Government to provide Ukraine with support for its defence amounting to no less than 0.25 per cent of Lirthuania's GDP, support for the country’s swiftest possible accession to the European Union, the importance of cooperation in the field of defence, and the value of drawing on Ukraine’s significant experience.
“Lithuania supported Ukraine even before Russia’s full-scale military invasion and, you can be certain, we will continue to do so. We fully understand that Ukraine is defending not only its own freedom, sovereignty and territorial integrity today, but that the security of the whole of Europe depends on the outcome of this war. It is equally important that Lithuania and other countries have much to learn from Ukraine today by strengthening defence cooperation and adopting its invaluable experience. I have no doubt that our governments will give this a high priority, and as Lithuania assumes the presidency of the Council of the EU next year, Ukraine will hold a particularly important place on the presidency’s agenda,” Prime Minister M. Sinkevičius said.
The discussion also stressed the need to continue increasing pressure on Russia — by strengthening sanctions and international isolation, preventing the circumvention of sanctions, and pursuing accountability for the crimes committed by the aggressor.
As it has done until now, Lithuania will continue contributing to strengthening the resilience of Ukraine’s energy sector, which is particularly important as winter approaches and Russia continues its targeted destruction of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
It is also important to continue strengthening partnerships that contribute to Ukraine’s reconstruction, economic recovery, increased resilience, and integration into the EU.
