Prime Minister Sinkevičius: we want to keep up positive direction in our bilateral relations with Azerbaijan
Lithuania seeks to strengthen the bilateral relations with Azerbaijan, Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius said on Monday during a phone call with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
“The partnership between Lithuania and Azerbaijan still has considerable potential for further development, contributing to the security, economic growth and resilience of both countries. We are committed to this because we see Azerbaijan as an important partner in the South Caucasus and support closer EU-Azerbaijan relations,” noted Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius.
The two leaders discussed the key areas of the Lithuania-Azerbaijan partnership, including energy security, resilience to hybrid threats, transport and connectivity, agriculture and the food industry, also cooperation in education and student exchange programmes.
Marking one year since the Washington summit and the initialling of the peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia on 8 August, the Prime Minister highlighted the historic significance of the event, President I. Aliyev’s personal contribution, and, more broadly, the efforts of both neighbouring countries – Azerbaijan and Armenia – to achieve lasting and sustainable peace. The Lithuanian Prime Minister also expressed Lithuania’s support for the peace process and the hope for further progress towards normalising relations.
The security situation in the region and the issue of military operations in Iran were also discussed.
