Prime Minister thanks German Chancellor Angela Merkel for her leadership

On behalf of the Government and the people of Lithuania, Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė has thanked the German Chancellor Angela Merkel for her leadership and tremendous personal contribution to a stronger European Union and effective transatlantic relations.  

‘The sixteen years in office have been marked by crises and challenges threatening Europe’s prosperity and security. Your fundamental commitment to seek Europe’s solidarity and unity in addressing them has made us all stronger and more confident in our Union. The responsibility assumed by Germany to take the lead in the NATO forward presence in Lithuania was a decision of historic significance, which showed the strength of the Alliance’s commitments’, notes the Prime Minister.  

Ingrida Šimonytė has expressed her appreciation of Angela Merkel’s personal attention to the Eastern Partnership, support to Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression and solidarity with Lithuania and other states in responding to Belarus regime’s hybrid attack on the European Union.  

'I am confident that your legacy will continue to drive German leadership, fostering cooperation between the peoples and states of Europe, addressing the unprecedented challenges of a pandemic and climate change, responding to ongoing security threats, strengthening the transatlantic link and further building the European future on the values and solidarity’, reads Prime Minister’s letter.
