Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė has sent warm greetings to Chris Hipkins on his appointment as New Zealand’s Head of Government.

‘Lithuania is honoured to call New Zealand a great friend, with whom we share the same values of freedom, democracy, and respect for human rights. The Lithuanian diaspora in New Zealand is another strong link between our countries.

Lithuania attaches a high priority to the strengthening of the ties with New Zealand and the countries in the Indo-Pacific region. It is with delight that I note our growing political and economic cooperation. I have no doubts that the accreditation of the Lithuanian Embassy for New Zealand is already contributing to these goals and bringing our countries closer together.

Today the democratic world is facing the biggest test to its values and our security. A premeditated Russian invasion of Ukraine, with the help from Belarus, shows an urgent need for democratic nations to stay united and to help Ukraine with all possible means.  We are grateful to New Zealand for the continuous support for Ukraine, as well as for keeping Russia and Belarus accountable for the war. I am certain that by acting together, we will not only help to overcome this evil but will also strengthen the values of freedom and democracy.

This year is of particular importance to Lithuania as it is getting ready to host a Vilnius NATO Summit in July, which is to address issues of paramount significance to the regional security, including the ways to strengthen cooperation between NATO and Asia-Pacific partners.

Taking the opportunity, on behalf of the people and the Government of the Republic of Lithuania, I wish to extend sincere congratulations to you on the occasion of the upcoming National Day of New Zealand,’ reads Prime Minister’s message of greetings.
