Statement on media reports on planned changes to Russia’s legislation regarding the state border
Such actions by the Russian Federation should be seen as a deliberate, targeted, escalating provocation to intimidate neighbouring states and their societies. This is yet another proof that Russia’s aggressive and revisionist policy poses a threat to the security of its neighbours and of Europe as a whole.
Lithuania summons a Russian representative today for a detailed explanation and coordinates its response with partners.
Lithuania reminds and calls on Russia to respect and comply with universally recognized principles and norms of international law, as well as global and bilateral agreements on the inviolability of existing borders, namely the 1991 Treaty on Fundamentals of Interstate Relations Between Lithuania and Russia, the 1997 Bilateral Border Treaty, the 1997 Treaty on the Delimitation of the Exclusive Economic Zone and the Continental Shelf in the Baltic Sea, the 2005 Agreement on the Common Point of Boundaries of the Exclusive Economic zones and Continental Shelf in the Baltic Sea, and other agreements.
