Chancellor of the Government stresses the importance of data governance in meeting the UN Sustainable Development Goals
Chancellor of the Government Giedre Balčytytė, who is currently on a working visit to the United States, participated in the United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda 2030 SDG Synthesis Coalition event in New York. The event showcased preliminary results of the first synthesis. Lithuania is one of the 10 member countries in the Steering Committee of the Coalition, which aims to enhance the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
According to Chancellor Balčytytė, strengthening global skills and capacities in data and reducing data gaps are crucial for achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals. She emphasized that this approach provides a comprehensive understanding of global challenges, facilitates the development of appropriate solutions, and enables effective progress monitoring.
During the event, the Chancellor highlighted Lithuania’s experience in collecting and analysing real-time data during the COVID-19 pandemic and other situations. She emphasized how this data has assisted in making well-informed decisions, prioritising actions, and monitoring goal implementation.
Lithuania has successfully reformed the State Data Agency, is employing real-time data solutions, and possesses valuable experience and technical tools. Chancellor Balčytytė expressed Lithuania’s willingness to share its success story with countries worldwide and contribute significantly to the mission of the Global SDG Synthesis Coalition. She noted that Lithuania’s accomplishments in data governance are invaluable and can be leveraged within the UN SDG Synthesis Coalition platform.
