Head of Government Discusses Topical Issues with Donald Tusk, Polish Prime Minister
Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas had a telephone conversation with the Polish Government leader, Donald Tusk, on Friday. Topics discussed during the conversation included regional security and strengthening defence, support for Ukraine, the priorities of Poland's Presidency of the EU Council, and joint Lithuanian-Polish energy and infrastructure projects.
“Excellent relations between Lithuania and Poland, our strategic partnership, and shared interests on key issues are vital for building a secure, resilient, and economically dynamic region and Europe. We share the same view on the importance of supporting Ukraine and investing in our defence, which remains as crucial as ever. I hope we can use this example to encourage our allies for the sake of our common security,” said Prime Minister G. Paluckas.
According to the Lithuanian Prime Minister, it is important to utilise all available formats to strengthen regional cooperation and rally support for Ukraine, including the proven Lublin Triangle format.
As was highlighted during the prime ministers' conversation, Russia will remain a long-term military threat, evidenced by its restoration of lost capabilities in Ukraine, the country's economy being geared towards military needs, and its aggressive hybrid activities. Given the shared threat, maximum efforts must be made to strengthen defence not only at the regional level but also across the entire EU.
The prime ministers emphasised their mutual interest in implementing the "Rail Baltica" and "Harmony Link" projects as quickly and smoothly as possible, noting their significance not only for the economy but for security as well.
G. Paluckas congratulated Poland on assuming the Presidency of the EU Council at the start of the year. During the conversation, the Polish Prime Minister emphasised that Poland can rely on Lithuania’s support in achieving its prioritised goals.
