Lithuanian and German Heads of Government point out exceptional bilateral relations, commitment to deepen strategic partnership

In a conversation with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius has reaffirmed the Government's commitment to strengthening the strategic partnership between Lithuania and Germany, emphasizing a smooth deployment of the German brigade in Lithuania by 2027 as a top priority.

"Lithuania’s and Germany’s relationship is unique in Europe, strengthening both our countries and the entire region. We highly value Germany’s contribution to ensuring the security of Lithuania and NATO’s eastern flank, as well as Germany’s leadership in Europe at a time of heightened security challenges. Our strategic partnership is not merely a declaration, and our solidarity is not just words—it is reflected in concrete examples of our effective cooperation, such as the deployment of the German brigade in Lithuania. I can assure you that both the Government and I personally will give this issue the highest priority and will work to further elevate Lithuania–Germany relations,” Prime Minister Sinkevičius said.

The deployment of the German brigade in Lithuania in 2027—including the development of the needed infrastructure and the provision of all required host nation support—as well as the further strengthening of Lithuania's strategic partnership with Germany, are commitments enshrined in the programme of the 21st Government.

On Friday, Prime Minister Sinkevičius will visit the Rūdninkai military training grounds, where the military infrastructure required for the deployment of the German brigade is being built at an accelerated pace.

The conversation with Chancellor Merz has also covered the regional security situation, highlighting the importance of strengthening critical infrastructure and the defence industry, also the need to continue support for Ukraine, maintain pressure on Russia—all in pursuit of a sustainable and just peace in Europe.
