Prime Minister extends greetings to UK’s new Head of Government
Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė has extended sincere greetings to Liz Truss on becoming the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
‘I would like to offer you my sincere congratulations on your appointment as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
Lithuania is honoured to call the United Kingdom a great friend and a strategic partner, with whom we celebrate 100th anniversary of diplomatic relations this year and share the same approach to the importance of the transatlantic bond to the regional and European security.
We highly value the continuous commitment of the United Kingdom to the security of the NATO Eastern flank and the Baltic region in particular, and the outstanding leadership in supporting Ukraine’s fight against brutal Russian aggression.
I am proud to note that both Lithuania and the United Kingdom were among the first countries to provide military support to Ukraine. As Ukraine heroically continues fighting for its own freedom and the global security order, our unity and joint support efforts are crucial in withstanding and stopping this unjustified Russian aggression as well as in not letting the global community get used to the flames of war on the European soil. I believe that by acting together, we will not only help Ukraine to overcome the evil it faces today but also to safeguard the whole European security order.
I can assure you that the Government of the Republic of Lithuania will continue paying special attention to the strengthening of the bilateral relations with the United Kingdom, especially in the areas of trade and innovation, culture and education, cybersecurity and financial technologies. The Lithuanian diaspora in the United Kingdom as well as the British nationals residing and working in Lithuania are some of the strongest links between our countries. They are creating prosperity and provide a valuable cultural contribution in both Lithuania and the United Kingdom.
With warm memories from our meeting in Vilnius this March, I would like to wish you personally and your Government every success in achieving your goals, also in enhancing the security, prosperity, and well-being of the people of the United Kingdom.
All of us in Europe are facing a number of unprecedented challenges due to Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, such as energy security, cost of living crisis, rising inflation and others. I look forward to working together with you at this critical time for our nations and hope to see you again in Vilnius at your earliest convenience’, reads Prime Minister’s letter.
