Prime Minister Holds Meeting with President of Latvia

Prime Minister of the 21st Government Mindaugas Sinkevičius met with Latvian President Edgar Rinkēvičs, who is paying a state visit to Lithuania.

During the meeting at the Government Office, the excellent bilateral relations between Lithuania and Latvia were highlighted, along with close cooperation across all formats — the European Union, NATO, the Nordic-Baltic Eight, and the Baltic Council of Ministers.

“Lithuania and Latvia share a common responsibility for the security and prosperity of the region, a shared assessment of threats and challenges, and an understanding that we are stronger together. My Government views the strategic partnership among the Baltic states as extremely important, and I have no doubt that it will only continue to grow stronger,” said Prime Minister M. Sinkevičius.

The discussion emphasised the need to further strengthen the security and resilience of NATO’s eastern flank against both conventional and hybrid threats. Lithuania and Latvia, as two of the Alliance’s leaders in terms of defence spending, are setting an exemplary standard of leadership in this area.

The meeting highlighted the partnership in developing defence industry capabilities, particularly in the areas of drones and counter-drone measures, as well as the importance of continued support for Ukraine. The Rail Baltica and Via Baltica projects, which are of particular importance for regional connectivity, military mobility, and the economy, also remain among the priorities of both countries.

The President of Latvia congratulated Prime Minister M. Sinkevičius, who was sworn in this week, and the Cabinet of Ministers led by him, wishing them success in their work.
