Prime Minister meets EU Ambassadors

Today, Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė has met with ambassadors of the European Union Member States to discuss foreign, European Union and key domestic policy issues, primarily focusing on the security situation in the neighbourhood and in the world, support for Ukraine, and the European Union’s migration and energy policies.

Prime Minister Šimonytė underscored the pivotal role of the European Union in promoting global stability and unity. She emphasized the need for consolidation, political solidarity, and the unwavering support of all Member States for EU decisions. These elements not only build confidence but also enhance the EU’s standing on the world stage. The Prime Minister called for close dialogue with the United States and concerted efforts to achieve sustainable peace.

With a focus on Ukraine, Prime Minister Šimonytė has stressed the importance of sustaining unwavering support and providing essential resources for the country. She urged the swift provision of requested arms and the strengthening of Ukraine’s air defence. The Prime Minister has reiterated the need to hold Russia accountable for its actions in Ukraine and continued vigilance in the application of sanctions.

On EU enlargement, Prime Minister Šimonytė has commended the merit-based integration process. She emphasized equal opportunities, the significance of comprehensive reforms, and the unique challenges Ukraine faces. The Prime Minister has expressed her hope for a positive recommendation from the European Commission regarding Ukraine’s and Moldova’s EU accession negotiations.

Turning to the protection of the EU’s external borders, the Prime Minister has stressed the importance of combating human smuggling effectively and forging stronger partnerships with third countries. She also has highlighted the necessity of understanding the threat posed by Russia and responding with confidence, including by enhancing defence capabilities and investment in defence.

On energy, the Prime Minister has noted that Lithuania’s energy supply security was secure even before the onset of the conflict in Ukraine, as tensions began to rise on Lithuania's borders. Additional measures were implemented to guarantee uninterrupted gas and electricity supply and supplementary operational and technical security measures were taken. Lithuania is closely monitoring the situation regarding the leak detected on October 8 in the Finland-Estonia Balticconnector gas pipeline. ‘That said, we’re staying calm. Lithuania’s energy infrastructure is secure, and we’re geared up for diverse contingencies’, said Ingrida Šimonytė.
