Prime Minister meets with NATO Secretary General: 5% of GDP for defence – a necessary commitment for every member of the Alliance

Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas met with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. The meeting focused on strengthening NATO’s eastern flank, expanding collective defence capabilities, and enhancing resilience to threats from Russia.

“Lithuania is already allocating nearly 4% of its GDP to defence in 2025, and next year we will increase this figure to 5.25%. This is a clear commitment to NATO objectives, the infrastructure needed for the German brigade in Lithuania, and the formation of a modern division. It is our response to the existential threat posed by Russia. All NATO members should deliver such a response together,” emphasised Prime Minister G. Paluckas.

The discussion also highlighted the need to maintain strong transatlantic unity and to swiftly implement NATO’s regional defence plans.

The meeting also addressed NATO’s role in supporting Ukraine and the need to demonstrate long-term political and military support for Ukraine at the upcoming summit in The Hague. “NATO and European countries must act without delay to deter further aggression,” noted G. Paluckas.
