Prime Minister Sinkevičius: Shared Historical Experience Is a Strength of Lithuania and Poland

On Thursday, Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius spoke by telephone with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

“Our countries are bound by a mature and dynamic strategic partnership. It is founded not only on the historical closeness of Lithuania and Poland and our shared historical experience, which is a source of strength for both our nations, but also on our common approach to the key issues of today. Foremost among these is the need to strengthen security on NATO’s eastern flank, enhance European security, and reinforce our defence and deterrence capabilities. Our shared responsibility requires the closest possible cooperation between our countries, and my Government will attach particular importance to this partnership. Equally important is our steadfast support for Ukraine. Our region, which has long faced threats from the East, must remain an unwavering rear base for the Ukrainian people,” Prime Minister Sinkevičius said.

Poland is Lithuania’s most important trading partner. Our two countries are also implementing joint regional energy and transport projects, among which Rail Baltica is particularly important from the perspectives of military mobility, economic development and connectivity.

Prime Minister Sinkevičius also emphasised the importance of coordinated action within the European Union and NATO, as well as cooperation in strengthening the resilience of critical infrastructure and the security of the EU’s external borders.

The leaders stressed that, as Russia continues its military aggression against Ukraine and remains a threat to the security of Europe as a whole, it is essential to maintain active support for Ukraine and increase pressure on Russia in pursuit of a sustainable and just peace.
