Prime Minister’s comment regarding symbols used by some of the protesters at today’s protest rally

Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė’s comment regarding symbols used by some of the protesters at today’s protest rally.

‘I apologize to all those who have been offended by the use of the Jewish and Holocaust symbols as well as comparisons with ghettos during the Nazi occupation by some of the protesters near the Seimas today. This is an unacceptable devaluation of the notions of the appalling tragedy of humanity. Symbols of the Holocaust are associated with many death-marked destinies and one of the greatest tragedies in European history. The current real and imagined inconveniences of life cannot be likened to exile, genocide, the Holocaust, or other atrocities – the people and their loved ones who have survived them still suffer wounds in their hearts and souls. It has been precisely to protect human lives as well as the vital health system needed for the benefit of the people that governments of various countries have imposed quarantine restrictions. I can only regret that on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Holocaust and Soviet repression, there are comparisons made that offend the memory of the people who had stood at the death pits or next to those who had frozen to death by the Laptev Sea,’ has emphasised Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė.
