Prime Minister’s Meeting with the Head of the Norwegian Government Focuses on Strong Bilateral Relations, Defence, and Support for Ukraine
Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas met with the Prime Minister of Norway, Jonas Gahr Støre, to discuss close bilateral relations, regional cooperation, and a joint response to pressing geopolitical and security challenges.
“Lithuania and Norway share excellent bilateral relations and dynamic regional cooperation, particularly within the Nordic-Baltic Eight (NB8) framework. The new 2021–2028 programme period of the European Economic Area and Norwegian financial mechanisms represents both a firm commitment from Lithuania and a unique opportunity to implement critically important projects. We are grateful to Norway for its significant contribution to regional security – from the transfer of air defence systems to the increasing Norwegian involvement in NATO’s enhanced Forward Presence battlegroup in Lithuania. This is a true example of solidarity,” said Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas.
The meeting devoted considerable attention to defence issues, the protection of critical infrastructure, and strengthening resilience. Both countries expressed their intention to deepen cooperation in the defence industry. “Norway is a strategic partner in efforts to reinforce our region’s resilience. Furthermore, we welcome the shared understanding that regional cooperation in the Baltic Sea area on critical infrastructure is becoming increasingly important,” noted Prime Minister Paluckas.
The importance of transatlantic relations was also underscored during the meeting. “We must continue to promote a positive and mutually beneficial transatlantic agenda, with a focus on strengthening Euro-Atlantic security and fostering sustainable economic cooperation,” said the Lithuanian Prime Minister.
In discussing support for Ukraine, both heads of government agreed on the need to continue comprehensive assistance, bolster Ukraine’s position in negotiations, and work towards long-term security guarantees, including NATO and EU membership. Equally important is the continued pressure on Russia through sanctions, particularly by curbing the operations of the shadow fleet, the Lithuanian and Norwegian leaders emphasised.
The Norwegian Prime Minister is participating in the Vilnius summit together with other leaders from NATO’s eastern and northern flanks, NATO Secretary General M. Rutte, and Ukrainian President V. Zelenskyy.
