Prime Minister and EC Executive Vice-President Discuss Social Policy Priorities and Role of AI in Education and Labour Market
Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius met with European Commission Executive Vice-President Roxana Mînzatu to discuss Lithuania’s preparations for its presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2027, the social policy agenda, the impact of artificial intelligence on education and the labour market, and priorities for the future EU budget.
Lithuania’s EU Council presidency will focus on strengthening the social dimension of the EU and finding solutions to ensure social protection, quality jobs, fair labour mobility, equal opportunities, and greater youth engagement.
“Europe’s resilience is inseparable from the resilience of its societies. Therefore, as we strengthen Europe’s security and economy, we must also work together to promote social cohesion, people’s well-being, and the ability to adapt to long-term changes,” said M. Sinkevičius.
The meeting also covered the Quality Jobs Act initiative, which Lithuania sees as one of the priorities of its presidency. The initiative aims to address emerging labour market challenges linked to algorithmic management and digitalisation.
On the EU’s future Multiannual Financial Framework, Mindaugas Sinkevičius and Roxana Mînzatu pointed outd the need to strike a balance between increased investment in security and defence and continued support for social cohesion, economic convergence and citizens’ well-being. Lithuania is for sufficient funding for cohesion policy and a strong European Social Fund Plus (ESF+) to support social inclusion, youth employment, skills development and access to essential services.
