Prime Minister Meets European Parliament President: Lithuania to Seek Solutions on European Security, Competitiveness and Enlargement During EU Council Presidency
As part of his working visit to Brussels, Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius met with European Parliament President Roberta Metsola to discuss the EU’s 2028–2034 Multiannual Financial Framework and preparations for Lithuania’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2027.
“We want to work closely with the European Parliament and jointly seek solutions to the issues that matter most to Europe. We need to ensure that the new EU budget reflects Europe’s changed security environment while also supporting economic growth and strengthening the resilience of our regions,” Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius said, outlining Lithuania’s priorities for its upcoming Presidency of the Council of the EU.
The meeting focused on the preparation of the new financial framework, the need for greater investment in security, access to the Competitiveness Fund, and the outlook for economic growth across Europe.
The Prime Minister also underlined the strategic importance of infrastructure. Lithuania will seek to secure adequate funding through the Connecting Europe Facility also for military mobility, with particular attention to key projects such as Rail Baltica and Via Baltica.
On support for Ukraine, the Prime Minister stressed the need for continued EU military and financial assistance, stronger enforcement of sanctions, and a united contribution from the Member States. The parties also discussed Ukraine and Moldova’s accession to EU and the importance of maintaining momentum and ensuring further progress.
